The team fixing Whitley Bay Metro helped at a local hub in the seaside town.

Kier Transportation has the metro contract, a project costing £5.3 million. They are working on the Grade II canopy and helping the community.

The team spent three days volunteering, painting and decorating a room. This room will now be better for meetings.

The Community Hub has a café, garden, meeting rooms, and a food bank. Whitley Bay Big Local runs the hub, which they obtained in 2021. They used government funds and a Charity Bank loan.

Sarah McManus, who works for Metro operator Nexus, said the metro project helps more than just transport. Metro is important to the local community, and they helped Whitley Bay Hub with Kier, providing a big help for the charity.

The Kier team decorated the meeting room over the holidays, and according to Sarah, they did a brilliant job. The metro canopy work is almost done, and customers saw the benefit when they removed scaffolding. The project finishes later this year.

David Carnaffan, who leads Whitley Bay Big Local, is happy with the metro station’s upgrade. Residents also like the updated station, which keeps its old charm.

Kier and Nexus volunteers improved the hub’s activity space by brightening the room with new colors and even updating windowsills for everyone.

The volunteers worked hard during the holidays, finishing before activities began in January. They worked evenings and even Saturdays.
