In County Durham, over 100 veterans built a 30ft Viking longboat to support mental health, using skills like wood-turning and metalwork in a meaningful project
More than 100 veterans participated in creating the longboat named Stormbird. The oak used for the boat was felled on D-Day in 2018. They learned traditional skills like wood-turning and metalwork during the project.
Bob Marshall, from The Viking Boat Company, shared that the focus and time spent on this project have positively impacted the veterans’ mental health. The replica is based on a preserved Viking boat found in Denmark in the 1970s.
Once finished, the longboat will be launched when the weather improves. Before that, it will be displayed at York’s Jorvik Viking Festival from February 17 to 22.
