Storm Eowyn is set to hit the North East with strong winds and heavy rain, causing potential travel disruptions and power outages this Friday
Newcastle: The UK is gearing up for Storm Eowyn this Friday. An Amber weather warning is in place for the North East. Expect very strong winds and heavy rain.
The warning kicks in at 6am and lasts until 9pm. Gusts could reach 60-70mph, with coastal areas seeing up to 90mph. This storm might also bring some snow.
Weather maps show winds picking up early Friday. By 6am, most areas will see gusts over 50mph. The winds will get stronger as the day goes on.
By noon, Northumberland will feel the brunt of the storm. Berwick could see gusts hitting 79mph. Hartlepool, down south, is expected to have 67mph winds.
Other areas won’t be spared either. Newcastle might hit 72mph, while Sunderland could see 69mph. Winds will slowly ease off by evening but won’t drop significantly until Saturday.
The Met Office warns that travel could be severely affected. Expect delays and cancellations on roads, rail, and air services. Flying debris could pose a danger too.
Rail services are already impacted. LNER announced no trains will run north of Newcastle from 11am. Driving will be tricky, with some roads and bridges likely to close.
Mark Nash from National Highways advises drivers to prepare for tough conditions. If it gets rough, adjust your driving to stay safe.
Residents in affected areas should secure their property. Check for loose items outside that could blow away. Stay updated on weather forecasts as things can change quickly.
