A man has been sentenced to 12 years for raping his victim over six years, following a brave report to the police that led to his conviction
The victim showed incredible bravery by reporting the abuse in 2021. This led to an investigation by Northumbria Police. Sams, who lives on Kenton Road, was arrested quickly. He denied all charges but was charged with eight counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
After a week-long trial at Newcastle Crown Court, the jury found him guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to 12 years behind bars. Additionally, he must follow a sexual harm prevention order and is now on the sex offender’s register.
Detective Constable Lucy Joyce led the investigation. She praised the survivor’s courage and hopes the sentence brings them some closure. She emphasized that Northumbria Police is dedicated to supporting all victims of sexual abuse, no matter when it happened.
If anyone has experienced sexual abuse, they can reach out to the police through social media or the Northumbria Police website. For those who prefer to call, the number is 101.
