Storm Éowyn is set to hit the North East with strong winds and snow, prompting an amber warning from the Met Office for Friday’s weather conditions
The amber warning for wind is in effect from 6am to 9pm this Friday. It covers areas like County Durham, Gateshead, and Newcastle. Gusts could reach up to 90mph in some spots.
There’s also a yellow warning for snow from 3am to midday Friday, affecting County Durham and Northumberland.
Expect power cuts and road disruptions. Public transport might also be affected. There’s a risk of damage to buildings, with roofs possibly blown off and power lines down.
Flying debris could cause injuries, and large waves might hit coastal areas. The Met Office warns to stay alert.
Storm Éowyn will sweep across the northwest of the UK on Friday, moving northeast by night. Winds will be very strong, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph inland and even higher along exposed coasts.
While there might be a brief lull in wind strength, it will pick up again. Winds should ease later on Friday.
The yellow warning for wind covers the entire North East all day Friday.
As for the snow, rain will initially fall as snow, especially on hills, before turning back to rain. Accumulations will be short-lived, mainly on higher ground.
In some areas, 2-5cm of snow could accumulate above 100m elevation, and 5-10cm above 300m.
In northern regions, snow may last longer, with up to 25cm possible above 300m. Strong winds could lead to temporary blizzard conditions in higher areas.
Stay tuned for updates on when the strong gusts will hit and which areas will be most affected.
