Consett: A family-owned wedding venue has just opened at Derwent Reservoir in County Durham. The Irwin family is excited to welcome couples to their new space called the Byirs.
This weekend marks the grand opening. The Irwins have worked hard to create a beautiful venue with both countryside and waterside views. They want it to feel relaxed and special for every couple.
Margaret, Paul, their son Sam, and his fiancé Anna Munro believe the Byirs feels like it’s “on an island.” They renovated a 16th-century barn, featuring a large glass front to enjoy the scenery year-round.
Sam, who used to coach football, previously ran a food business on the site. Now, he’s bringing his customer service skills to the wedding venue, aiming for an exclusive experience.
Sam shared that they want to keep the farm’s charm alive, with animals like sheep and llamas still around. They have ten years of hospitality experience, which inspired them to create something unique.
The Irwins hope to host 40 to 50 weddings each year. They’re already seeing interest, especially with engagements happening over the holidays. The venue will be open all year long.
This weekend, they’ll hold their first wedding showcase. Couples can meet suppliers and explore what the venue offers. Sam wants it to feel relaxed, not like a typical wedding fair.
Sam believes their venue stands out because of its stunning views. It combines countryside and waterside elements, making it feel like a getaway from the North East.
The Byirs Wedding Showcase runs from 12 PM to 4 PM on Saturday and Sunday, February 1 and 2. It’s a great chance for couples to see the venue and plan their special day.
