Chris Illman, founder of Wetherspoons The Game, is changing his middle name to ‘Spoons’ in Newcastle, celebrating with friends and a charitable event.
Newcastle: Chris Illman, the founder of Wetherspoons The Game, is making a fun change. He’s changing his middle name to ‘Spoons’ by deed poll. He’ll sign the paperwork this Sunday evening.
Chris, 43, says this has been a long time coming. He insists he’s not obsessed with Wetherspoons, even though his cat is named Spoons. He just enjoys the group’s vibe.
When the Facebook group hit 10,000 members, Chris got a tattoo. He never thought the group would grow that big. The tattoo features a spoon and a cloud, which he calls a “weather spoon.”
His friends and family find the name change hilarious. Chris often jokes about doing things he thinks won’t happen, but here he is, ready to make it official.
He’ll sign the papers while playing the game at Mile Castle, a Wetherspoons pub. This event also helps feed the homeless, with 200 burgers and snacks collected for Newcastle Helping Street Friends.
Some moderators from the Facebook group are joining him in Newcastle. One of them, Stephen Lowery, encouraged Chris to go through with the name change. He’ll even witness the signing.
After signing, Chris will meet with a solicitor to finalize everything. Soon, he’ll be known as Chris Spoons Illman. It’s a fun twist in his life!
