Around 400 refugees have been living at the Quality Hotel since the war began. They were told to leave by February 7, which was a tough blow. Finding a new place in this rental market is no easy task.
After the eviction notice, locals rallied to support the families. Many pointed out the strong bonds formed between the community and the refugees, especially with the kids attending local schools.
This morning, relief washed over Youghal as local leaders announced the eviction order was on hold. Families can stay at the hotel for now, which is a huge relief.
Fianna Fáil TD James O’Connor worked hard to keep the families in town. He was thrilled to share the news that the Department of Integration had paused their decision.
O’Connor mentioned he had been in constant touch with the government to advocate for the families. He emphasized the disruption this would cause for everyone involved.
Members of the Youghal Ukrainian Hub expressed joy over the news. A spokesperson shared that the families were overwhelmed with happiness and relief.
They feel secure now, especially for their children. The spokesperson thanked everyone who supported their cause, including local leaders and the media.
