I then found the Norman castle which houses the Museum of Somerset. Castle Green surrounds the museum. The castle looks a bit like a college. A red dragon flag flew from the gatehouse; it’s the Somerset flag.
Nearby, Bath Place has small shops decorated with bunting. I stopped and thought Taunton was quite nice!
No one had said Taunton was bad as it is not a hated town. Actually, nobody told me much, I just read basic facts. People liked it, but couldn’t explain why. Journalists usually know towns’ reputations, which might be fair or wrong. But, towns usually have reputations anyway.
Bath gets called “bougie” and Frome is known as “fancy”. People call Bridgwater “troubled” and Glastonbury is famous for “naked hippies.” These stereotypes are in Somerset and we must test these impressions.
Taunton lacks such a clear image. Susie, a local artist who was born in Taunton, agrees with this. Susie explored her life and returned home.
She was asked about Taunton’s image and thinks it needs one. It lacks a “brand” and she wants the town to push this, saying cricket, cider, and history define Taunton.
Taunton could create a name. An energetic independent scene could help. Frome became indie recently so why not Taunton?
Local businesses agree with Susie. Elaine, who owns World of Bears since 2004, enjoys seeing families grow. Children are now adults who still shop there.
Elaine praised Taunton’s independent scene. The Independent Market does well and happens twice a month on Castle Green. She says it keeps growing.
Lionel runs Brendon Books since 1989. He saw customers grow and pass away. His shop is part of the town and is a Community Interest Company where profits support community projects. Bath Place has independent shops that people seek out. Shopping became quieter lately, like most places.
I left Taunton at day’s end and the town’s potential became clear. Weekend markets happen near the castle. Bath Place looked charming and the Independent Quarter thrives. Taunton may become an indie shopping center. Frome, watch out! Taunton is a new competitor.
