A Sunderland man has been sentenced for violently attacking his partner while on bail for previous domestic violence charges, leaving her with serious injuries.
Gibson met his partner through a friend last April. Initially, he seemed nice, but soon became controlling. He made her delete male friends from social media, threatening violence if she didn’t.
In May, she tried to leave his home to visit family, but he blocked her. He then assaulted her, causing swelling and injuries. After a brief separation, they got back together, but his behavior worsened.
On May 14, after drinking, he attacked her in a pub. She lost consciousness and suffered multiple injuries. Despite being arrested and released on bail, he assaulted her again days later.
On May 19, they met again, but he quickly became aggressive. He threatened her and physically assaulted her, causing her to fall. She tried to call for help but couldn’t get through.
Gibson continued to threaten her on the bus, and when they got off, he punched her repeatedly. She suffered a fractured jaw that required surgery. He choked her for several minutes before she escaped.
In court, the victim expressed her fear and embarrassment over the situation. Gibson, 23, has a history of violence and was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, along with a ten-year restraining order.
His defense claimed he felt guilty and struggled with personal issues. The case highlights the serious impact of domestic violence on victims and their families.
