South Shields: A couple is really upset. They’ve had CCTV outside their flat for 12 years. Now, they’ve been told to take it down.

Steven and Melanie put up the cameras after someone tried to steal Steven’s work van. They’ve been super helpful, especially for safety. Even the police have used the footage for investigations.

But last year, Home Group got complaints from neighbors. They said the cameras invade their privacy. Home Group claims the layout of the area makes it hard to install cameras without affecting others.

Steven and Melanie argue their cameras only watch their van. They don’t see how it’s a privacy issue. After getting a letter to remove the cameras, they applied for permission. It was granted, but Home Group later said it was a mistake.

In December, they got a final warning. They could face court action for not following the lease. Steven thinks it’s ridiculous. He said, “It puts my business at risk. The cameras make everyone feel safer.”

Another resident, Andrea, had to take down her cameras too. She had them for four and a half years. She felt safer with them up.

Home Group is also asking residents to remove Ring Doorbells. They plan to talk to everyone about installing their own CCTV soon.

Andy Hayes from Home Group explained they received complaints about the cameras. Some were put up without permission. They apologized for the earlier mistake but insisted the cameras must come down. They want to respect everyone’s privacy.
