Liverpool’s taste test reveals surprising opinions on Murphy’s and Guinness
Last year, younger folks really got into Guinness. They started this fun game called “splitting the G.” It’s all about making that first sip cut the G on the glass. Because of that, pubs ran low on Guinness barrels before Christmas. Meanwhile, Murphy’s sales shot up by 632% in the UK. Crazy, right?
To settle the debate, Liverpool Echo’s Dan Haygarth and Alice Walker decided to do a blind taste test. Dan loves Guinness, calling it his favorite beer. He raves about its creamy head and rich flavors. But he also likes Murphy’s and thinks it’s a nice change.
When they got to The Lion, Alice ordered both stouts in unmarked glasses. Dan took a sip and immediately had his doubts about Murphy’s. He found it thinner and a bit earthy. He thought it was Murphy’s right away.
Dan mentioned that while Murphy’s claims to be sweeter, he didn’t find that to be true. He felt it had a more bitter taste with roasted coffee notes. But he did say it wasn’t a bad drink, just not as thick and smooth as Guinness.
When he tried the Guinness, he noticed the difference right away. The creamy head and rich flavors made it stand out. He confidently identified it as Guinness.
Alice confirmed Dan’s guesses. She shared her first experience with Murphy’s, saying she usually doesn’t drink stouts. She’s had Guinness a few times but not much. She found Murphy’s enjoyable but agreed it tasted thinner and didn’t have that iconic Guinness flavor. Still, she finished her pint happily.
