Sainsbury’s is set to lay off over 3,000 staff and shut down its cafes, including two in the North East, as part of a major restructuring effort.
Darlington: Sainsbury’s is making some big changes. They’re cutting over 3,000 jobs and closing all their in-store cafes. This includes two cafes in County Durham.
That’s about 2% of their workforce, which is around 148,000 people. They’re also trimming down senior management roles by about 20%. The goal is to simplify things and focus on bigger roles.
They’ve decided to shut down 61 cafes, but they’ll consult with staff first. Most shoppers don’t really use the cafes much anymore. Instead, food halls and other options are getting more popular.
Simon Roberts, the CEO, mentioned that they’re facing tough times with costs. He said they need to make some hard choices to keep the business running smoothly.
He added that these decisions are crucial for moving forward, but they’re tough on the employees affected. Sainsbury’s will try to help those impacted by finding them new roles if possible.
They’ll also be closing their hot food and pizza counters, moving popular items to the aisles instead. It’s all about making things more efficient.
