A drug addict has been jailed for defrauding a brain injury victim to support his addiction, leaving the victim financially vulnerable and in distress.
Pelaw: A man has been jailed for stealing from a vulnerable brain injury victim. This victim has struggled with finances since a brain injury in 1986.
In March last year, a social worker noticed the victim had only £40 left. He reported that a man named Bloy was taking his money. The victim often had little food at home.
By June, he had just £10 left from a £200 allowance. He expressed a desire for Bloy to stay away. Police were informed, but the victim couldn’t follow their advice to avoid Bloy.
CCTV footage showed Bloy with the victim multiple times, even after being told to stay away. Judge Gavin Doig stated that Bloy took advantage of the victim’s vulnerability.
Prosecutors couldn’t determine the exact amount Bloy stole. The victim received a weekly allowance of £200, totaling £8,400 during the time of the fraud.
Bloy, with 74 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to fraud and received a 15-month jail sentence. He also has a restraining order against contacting the victim.
His defense attorney mentioned that Bloy has stopped using drugs while in custody. He’s even taken steps to become a bus driver.
