Newcastle: Northumbrian Water is launching its biggest investment plan ever. They will spend £2.6 billion over five years to improve water and sewer services.

This investment will upgrade pipelines, treatment works, and pumping stations. It’s expected to create 3,000 jobs each year in the North East.

Starting in April, the average household in England and Wales will see a £123 increase in their water bill. This means an extra £10 a month for many families.

However, Northumbrian Water customers will see a smaller increase. Their bills will rise by about £79 a year, or roughly £6 a month.

From April 2025, the average water bill in the North East will be around £507 a year. Customers will pay about £1.39 daily for their water services.

Northumbrian Water promises that the extra money will only fund improvements in the region. They plan to spend 60p of every pound with local suppliers to support the local economy.

Mark Wilkinson, head of Affordability Support, emphasized the importance of reliable service. He acknowledged that bill increases can be concerning and highlighted available support options.

Last year, they helped over 100,000 customers with financial support. Their website offers resources for those needing help with bills.

Some key projects include a £2.2 million upgrade at a service reservoir in Fenham. This will ensure safe water supplies for Newcastle customers.

In Gateshead, a £3.6 million program is renewing water mains to improve local water quality. Additionally, £56 million is being invested in a new reservoir for South Tyneside and Wearside.

In County Durham, a £155 million project will enhance water supplies for 200,000 customers. This includes building 57 kilometers of new pipeline.

In Northumberland, upgrades at sewage treatment works are underway to protect local watercourses. These projects aim to improve capacity and reduce environmental risks.
