Plans to upgrade two roundabouts in Northumberland may be scrapped after being labeled as poor value for money by National Highways
These roundabouts, Seaton Burn and Moor Farm, have been on the agenda for years. A report back in 2016 highlighted them as key improvements for the area.
At a recent council meeting, Coun Richard Wearmouth expressed concerns about the project’s future. He mentioned that they’ve been pushing for these upgrades for a long time.
Unfortunately, National Highways has completed their assessment and decided to halt the project team. They believe the costs outweigh the benefits.
Coun Wearmouth said they would keep fighting for these junction improvements. He feels it’s a ridiculous situation and worries about future funding cuts.
Coun Mark Swinburn, representing Cramlington Village, echoed these sentiments. He pointed out that while other areas get upgrades, Northumberland seems overlooked.
Local drivers know all too well the congestion and safety issues at these roundabouts. A spokesperson from National Highways explained their assessment process.
They consider various factors, including value for money and stakeholder views. But for now, the future of these upgrades remains uncertain.
The final decision will depend on government reviews, and it’s a waiting game for the community.
