Northumberland: Park officials are thrilled about more people using public transport. It’s great to see visitors exploring popular sites like Hadrian’s Wall.

In January, reports showed that visitor numbers remained strong, even after the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down. Last year, over 750,000 people visited the area, including Northumberland, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, and Cumbria.

The Hadrian’s Wall Partnership noted an 11% increase in passengers on the Go North East AD122 bus route. This scenic route now runs year-round. The Tyne Valley Railway also saw a 12.85% rise in passengers.

The AD122 bus takes visitors to key sites like Vindolanda, Housesteads Roman Fort, and Steel Rigg. Concerns about the tree’s felling affecting tourism seem unfounded, as numbers are up.

Duncan Wise from the National Park Authority praised the bus service for promoting environmentally friendly travel. He expressed excitement about the increase in passenger numbers and the commitment to sustainable transport.

Daniel Laird from Go North East shared his delight over the rise in passengers. He credited the service’s success to collaboration with local organizations like the National Trust and English Heritage.

Looking ahead, the Partnership Board has secured £9 million to enhance attractions and improve infrastructure in Hadrian’s Wall Country.
