North Tyneside: The council’s funding gap has dropped to £8.9 million. But they’re still facing some tough challenges ahead.

Local leaders pointed out that there’s a growing need for special needs assessments for kids, homelessness support, and social care. Inflation is also putting a strain on their budget.

They had hoped to balance the budget, but it’s still a work in progress. Plans to improve school transport are in the mix, but it’s not easy. They’ve put in £1.5 million to help, but the number of kids using the service hasn’t changed much.

Homelessness is another big issue. The council spends nearly £800,000 on bed and breakfast accommodations due to rising demand. Even with national grants, the pressure is still on.

Children’s services are feeling the heat too, with a reported pressure of £13.8 million. The complexity of cases is increasing, and some placements can cost over £7,600 a week.

Despite these challenges, Mayor Norma Redfearn is proud of their social care services. After a recent Ofsted inspection, they received outstanding ratings across the board.

Dame Norma emphasized that they’re doing well for both young and elderly residents. She mentioned that they’re the only council in the northern region to achieve such high marks.

She said, “Even with all the pressures, we’re putting people first. Sometimes tough choices are needed, but we’re committed to our community.”
