The North Shields 800 celebrations began today with live music and speeches, promising a year of exciting events in the town.
The town has planned a full calendar of events for 2025. Expect parades, exhibitions, street art, and performing arts.
TV host Rachel Sweeney led the launch, featuring speeches from Mayor Dame Norma Redfearn and Tynemouth MP Sir Alan Campbell.
Singer-songwriter Liam Fender performed, and local band Hector Gannet will play free gigs for over 800 guests this weekend.
Actress Jill Halfpenny joined the crowd, and children from New York Primary School sang “Spirit of the North.”
Liam Fender shared his excitement about the creative community in North Shields. He’s also working on a documentary to highlight the town’s growth and musical history.
North Shields started in 1225 as simple huts by the Fish Quay. It has grown into a town of about 35,000 people over the centuries.
Sir Alan Campbell praised the festival as a chance to celebrate the town’s rich history and bright future.
The festival aligns with ongoing regeneration projects, including the new Riverside Embankment Walkway and a transport hub.
Months of planning led to today’s launch, with over 100 people creating a giant “800” at the Collingwood Monument last June. For more details on upcoming events, check the dedicated website.
