A North East family had a memorable trip to Edinburgh for their brave daughter, Evie, who received a heart transplant last summer
Edinburgh: A young girl named Evie Green and her family had a fantastic time in Edinburgh, thanks to a local charity and a train company. Evie, just five years old, has been through a lot. She was diagnosed with myocarditis when she was only four months old. This condition made her heart weak and led to her needing a transplant by age four.
Last spring, Evie got a Berlin Heart Ventricular Assist Device while waiting for her new heart. She spent over a year in the hospital. Finally, after a national appeal, she received her heart transplant last summer at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.
During her hospital stay, Evie’s family got support from The Charlie and Carter Foundation. This charity helps families of seriously ill kids, easing their financial worries so they can focus on being together.
For 2024/25, Lumo chose this charity as its partner. They teamed up to give Evie and her family a special trip to Edinburgh, where they could enjoy some fun together.
The family’s day included a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, Camera Obscura, and even a ride in Lumo’s driver’s cab. It was a day filled with joy and laughter.
Sarah Cookson MBE, co-founder of the charity, expressed her gratitude to Lumo for making this trip possible. She said it was a chance for Evie and her family to create lasting memories after such a tough time.
Evie’s mom, Chloe, shared how thankful they were for the trip. After 18 months in the hospital, it felt amazing to explore Edinburgh and enjoy a day out together.
Martijn Gilbert, Lumo’s Managing Director, was thrilled to provide this experience. He emphasized the importance of making memories for families like Evie’s, who have faced so many challenges.
