Tyne and Wear: Nexus is rolling out a new fleet of trains worth £362 million. This is a big deal for the Metro system.

The rollout will happen in phases over the next two years. They plan to have 23 of the 46 new trains in service by the end of this year.

The first new train started service on December 18, 2024. This marks a new chapter for the Metro and the North East.

Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, shared their excitement about the new fleet. He mentioned that they are focused on getting the rest of the trains ready for customers.

Currently, 13 new trains are in North East England, undergoing testing. Stadler will deliver about 20 more trains from Switzerland this year.

This project is the largest in Metro’s history. Nexus is working hard to ensure each train is safe and ready for passengers.

They are also training 200 drivers to operate the new trains. This training includes classroom sessions and practical driving lessons.

Throughout 2025, customers will see both new and old trains in service. New trains will enter service at a rate of one or two each month.

Michael Richardson, Head of Fleet at Nexus, explained that as more drivers are trained, the introduction of new trains will speed up.

The testing process is crucial, and they have completed thousands of checks. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition to the new technology.
