Northumberland: The deputy leader of Northumberland County Council shared updates about the new station. Newsham station will open by the end of February.

At a recent meeting, Coun Richard Wearmouth mentioned that currently, trains only stop at Ashington and Seaton Delaval. There have been delays, but Newsham is finally on track to open.

Originally, Newsham was supposed to open earlier, but issues with power and regulations pushed it back to early 2025. While Coun Wearmouth provided updates, he couldn’t give a specific opening date.

Other stations like Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, and Northumberland Park are also set to open later this year. Despite the delays, over 50,000 passengers used the line in its first month.

This is the first time trains have run on this line since the Beeching Cuts in the 1960s. Coun Wearmouth noted that lessons learned here could help reopen the Leamside Line, another line affected by the cuts.

He emphasized the importance of promoting the Leamside project. North East mayor Kim McGuinness added that the Northumberland Line opens up the area and we need to keep pushing for more.
