Newcastle: James Bowes, known as the ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ has racked up his 119th offence at 64. He’s a career criminal who has targeted the elderly for years.

Recently, Bowes was caught stealing pots and pans from John Lewis. This happened just three days after finishing a community order for theft. The items were worth £123.98, and he was easily identified on CCTV.

Bowes, who used to live in Slatyford, now resides on Rothbury Terrace in Heaton. He received a four-week prison sentence, suspended for six months, after pleading guilty at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court.

The judge reminded him that stealing leads to prison. Bowes has a long history of theft, including a previous jail term for fraud. He exploited elderly people by pretending to be a roofing expert.

His latest theft occurred on December 6, when staff noticed loose security tags in the store. CCTV showed him removing tags from the pots and pans. He was arrested shortly after.

Bowes’ lawyer mentioned his declining health, stating he has several medical issues. He’s scheduled for hospital treatment in February.

In the past, Bowes has served multiple prison sentences for theft and fraud. His actions have been described as disgraceful, especially when he targeted vulnerable pensioners.
