While the university believes this move could help its future, the University and College Union (UCU) is concerned. They are upset about the timing, given the recent funding shortfall of £35 million due to fewer international students.
In response to the financial issues, the university has approved £30 million in savings. This includes cutting £20 million from salaries, which could lead to 300 job losses. They are also expanding a voluntary severance scheme for all employees.
Prof Matt Perry from the UCU expressed disbelief at the plans for the Indian campus. He stated that staff are worried about job security while the university explores new projects abroad.
The UCU is currently voting on potential strike action, with results expected on February 10. Meanwhile, a university spokesperson reassured staff that they are in the early stages of exploring partnerships in India.
