Newcastle: Schools in England are entering a new era of accountability. Education minister Catherine McKinnell shared this news in the House of Commons.

On Monday, new proposals for Ofsted inspections were unveiled. Schools could be graded in various areas, like attendance and inclusion. They will use a color-coded five-point scale. Ratings will range from red for “causing concern” to green for “exemplary.”

These changes follow criticism of the inspection system after the tragic death of head teacher Ruth Perry. Her school was downgraded by Ofsted, which raised concerns about the impact of such reports.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has faced criticism for these reforms. The general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders expressed concern that the new system could worsen the situation for teachers.

Phillipson defended the new report cards, saying they provide valuable insights for parents. She believes parents want more information about their children’s schools, including strengths and weaknesses.

Previously, Ofsted used four single-phrase judgments: outstanding, good, requires improvement, and inadequate. Phillipson noted that “good” has become too vague.

She emphasized the need to maintain high standards in schools. The Department for Education plans to intervene quickly with schools facing serious issues. They are also consulting on new support arrangements for state schools.

McKinnell stated that the new era of accountability aims to support schools that can improve. Over £20 million will be allocated for new regional improvement teams to help schools.

However, shadow education secretary Laura Trott questioned the effectiveness of the new proposals. She argued that the new system might be slower and less effective than the current one.

In response, McKinnell insisted that the new approach would prioritize schools needing support and drive improvement.
