Ian Trought, formerly of RHS Wisley, is the new head gardener at Overbecks Garden, aiming to enhance its beauty and visitor experience.
Ian worked at RHS Garden Wisley before. He oversaw gardens there that were made by a famous designer, Piet Oudolf. He takes over from other gardeners who have worked there since 1895.
He moved from Surrey to South Hams. Ian started with the National Trust. He once worked as a manager at Apple. Volunteering at Ham House sparked his interest in gardening.
Ian interned at Nymans garden and trained at Cliveden. “I’m thrilled to lead Overbeck’s,” he stated, as he loves its location by the sea. Subtropical plants grow well there, and he wants to see how the garden changes and how visitors enjoy it.
Overbeck’s Garden reopens soon, on March 2. The team has been very busy pruning, fixing paths, and clearing old plants to improve the visitor experience further. They plan more parking and a new kiosk will open in 2025.
