Gateshead: Traffic data shows some good news. After the flyover closed, fewer cars are on the roads. The council thinks drivers are listening to the warnings.

But they say it’s too soon to be sure. Traffic patterns change a lot based on the day and time. They noticed fewer cars on the Tyne Bridge and nearby routes.

Before the closure, the A167 flyover was busy. Now, some drivers are taking the A1 and A19 instead. It seems like they’re avoiding central Gateshead altogether.

In the week after the closure, traffic on the Tyne Bridge dropped from over 22,000 to about 19,900 vehicles. Southbound traffic also fell a bit.

The bridge was already seeing less traffic due to ongoing repairs. For those using the A167, the detour added about six minutes to their trip.

Gateshead Council shut the flyover on December 13 due to serious structural issues. This caused a bit of chaos, even halting Metro services for a while.

Metro services resumed on New Year’s Eve after some quick fixes. They plan to reinforce the pillar soon while they look for funds to demolish it.
