Sonnet in Alnwick earns a spot in the Michelin Guide, impressing diners with its unique 14-course tasting menu and warm hospitality from its owners.
Sonnet opened just 11 months ago. Co-owner and chef Gary McDermott is thrilled. He and partner Claudia Mazareanu are excited about this amazing start to the year.
Gary and Claudia met while working in a hotel. They share a passion for food and have over 20 years of experience. They opened Sonnet last February, aiming for Michelin-level success.
Their restaurant competes with other Michelin-starred spots in Northumberland. Diners love their 14-course tasting menu, featuring local ingredients. They serve dishes with a personal touch and a bit of humor.
One dish is called Cheese What, inspired by Claudia’s reaction to Gary’s creation. Another, Elevenses, pays homage to family tea time traditions.
In just six months, Sonnet became the top fine dining choice on TripAdvisor. Michelin inspectors took notice and included them in the latest guide update. The big Michelin Award Ceremony is on February 10 in Glasgow.
The Michelin Guide praised Sonnet for its 14 carefully crafted courses. They highlighted Gary’s cooking and called Claudia a “natural host.” The restaurant focuses on personal touches and storytelling through food.
Gary expressed gratitude for their guests and team. He said, “What an incredible start to the year! We are blown away to be in the January inspectors’ choice.”
Sonnet is open Wednesday to Saturday. They offer a £95 tasting dinner menu and a six-course lunch for £40. Reservations can be made online. Check out the full list of new Michelin entries too!
