Audrey Best, a vibrant 101-year-old, enjoys singing and lunch outings with friends, proving age is just a number.
Audrey joined the group over a year ago. She wanted to make friends and keep singing. This month, her friends surprised her for her birthday.
When she walked in, there was a giant balloon, cake, and lots of cards. They sang happy birthday and dedicated the session to songs from her life.
Peter Wolf, the group manager, said Audrey was emotional but happy. She didn’t cry, but you could see she was moved. Everyone loves her.
Peter sent an email to the group about Audrey’s birthday. Everyone brought cards. Local shops even donated gifts for her special day.
Audrey shared her secret to a long life: no alcohol or cigarettes. She served in the RAF during World War II, driving ambulances and more.
One day, she witnessed a plane crash while waiting for two others to return. It was a tough moment, but she helped with the aftermath.
The hardest part of her job was delivering farewell letters from aircrew to their families. It was a heavy responsibility.
After the war, Audrey became a teacher for children with special needs. She didn’t know such schools existed but fell in love with the job.
She worked there for many years, even missing her retirement by three years! She just kept going because no one told her to stop.
Audrey shared photos of school productions she organized. She poured her heart into her work and loved the kids like family.
Though her husband has passed, Audrey has always lived in Cramlington. The singing group helps her socialize and feel connected.
She looks forward to the group every week and leaves feeling uplifted. With 70 to 80 attendees, it’s a lively place for her to enjoy.
Before the session, she often grabs a bite to eat at the café downstairs. It’s a lovely routine for this remarkable lady.
