Massive €132m Investment by Global Med-Tech Giant at Their Cork Facility

Cork: GE HealthCare is investing €132 million in a new manufacturing facility. This expansion will take place at their existing site in Carrigtohill.

The investment shows confidence in the Cork location, especially with uncertainties in the U.S. market. The new plant will help produce more contrast media, which is essential for medical imaging.

By 2027, the facility aims to provide 25 million more doses of contrast media each year. Taoiseach Micheál Martin will officially start construction today.

Contrast media helps doctors see organs and tissues better during scans. Demand for these products is expected to double in the next decade due to an aging population and rising chronic health issues.

The new facility will include advanced systems for production and will support both current and future products. This will ensure a steady supply of contrast media globally.

During the event, Taoiseach Martin praised GE HealthCare’s long-term commitment to Ireland and its skilled workforce.

Kevin O’Neill, CEO of GE HealthCare’s Pharmaceutical Diagnostics, emphasized the need to meet growing global demand.

Eugene Barrett, Site Leader at GE HealthCare Ireland, highlighted the importance of this expansion for the Cork community.

IDA Ireland’s CEO, Michael Lohan, welcomed the investment, noting its positive impact on local employment and expertise.

The project will create over 250 construction jobs, with work starting in February 2025.
