Byker: A car crashed into a restaurant and caught fire. John Henry Sayers and his son are in court over this incident.

Both men, 61 and 28 years old, are from Fossway in Byker. They face serious charges, including causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police were called to the scene on Sunday evening. A man in his 30s was hurt and taken to the hospital. He has serious injuries and is still receiving treatment.

In court, the Sayers appeared together. Their charges can only be heard at the crown court, so no pleas were entered.

The judge explained that they also face charges for having offensive weapons. John Henry Snr had a machete, while John Henry Jnr had a metal bar.

They will appear again at Newcastle Crown Court on March 4. For now, both men are in custody.

A police spokesperson confirmed the disturbance involved a vehicle crashing and catching fire. A group of men were also involved in a fight.

Another man, a teenager, was arrested but has since been released on bail.
