Cork: An MEP from Ireland South is pushing for action on traffic issues. Cynthia Ní Mhurchú is calling on the Cork City Council to step up.

She’s worried about how bad traffic is affecting the local economy. Heavy congestion is not just a hassle; it’s hurting businesses too.

Ní Mhurchú wants high-tech traffic cameras to help manage the flow. These cameras could catch drivers blocking yellow boxes and misusing bus lanes.

She’s also suggesting a new traffic management plan. This plan would focus on quickly removing cars after minor accidents.

Long waits on the N40 are a common complaint. Many drivers face hour-long delays, even for small incidents. A recent survey ranked Cork as the 38th most congested city globally.

This puts Cork ahead of major cities like Toronto and London. Many locals have reached out to Ní Mhurchú, sharing their frustrations about travel times.

One person mentioned it took 90 minutes to get from Glanmire to Bishopstown. Another said it took 105 minutes to reach CUH Wilton, even outside peak hours.

Ní Mhurchú believes we need to explore all options. This includes smart junction technologies and better traffic enforcement.

She’s also requested an expert report to find ways to ease congestion. Now, she’s waiting for a response from the City Council.
