Newcastle: A man from Gateshead has been jailed for attacking another man in a bar. George Banister, 31, smashed a VK bottle and assaulted the victim.

The incident happened in Butlers bar last June. Banister overheard a woman on the phone, upset about her ex. The ex had threatened her, which escalated tensions.

When the ex arrived, he tried to talk to his wife. Banister intervened, grabbing the man by the throat and punching him. He then used a sharp object, possibly a box cutter, on the victim’s neck.

Banister urged the victim to take the fight outside. The victim called the police, who arrived shortly after. The victim’s wife heard the threats during a phone call.

Banister admitted to smashing the bottle and attacking the man. He claimed he acted out of fear for the woman’s safety. He has a long criminal history, including robbery and assault.

He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and received a sentence of six years and four months, plus an extended license after release.
