Gateshead: A soldier from Gateshead is in Japan for his first overseas training. Jude Danks, 19, is working with the Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces. They are practicing defense strategies against potential threats.

Jude joined the Army in September 2022 after leaving Biddick Academy. He trained at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. He’s set for parachute training in March after completing his tests.

He serves with The Scots Guards but volunteered for 3 PARA’s Guards Parachute Platoon. Now, he’s on Kyushu Island for Exercise Vigilant Isles with his fellow soldiers.

The exercise aims to strengthen military ties between the UK and Japan. British soldiers are the only European group allowed this type of training.

Jude shared that the experience in Japan has been great. He appreciates the friendly Japanese soldiers and has learned about their equipment and tactics. He noted similarities and interesting differences in their operations.

He has previously participated in Trooping the Colour and mounted guard at Windsor Castle. Now, he wants to focus more on soldiering. Jude feels that joining 3 PARA is a refreshing change. He believes he will return to the Guards as a better soldier with new skills and experiences.
