Cork: Gardeners are being asked to sprinkle chilli powder in their gardens this February. It may sound strange, but it helps attract birds while keeping other animals away.

During winter, birds often struggle to find food. By using chilli powder, you can leave food out for them without it being stolen by squirrels or mice. Birds don’t taste the spice, so they won’t mind it at all.

Birdwatching is becoming popular in Cork, thanks to local ornithologist Seán Ronayne. His recent appearances on shows and documentaries have inspired many to take up birdwatching.

If you want to help birds in your area, try putting out food in your garden. A mix of peanuts, seeds, mealworms, and fruit slices works well. Bruised apples and pears are favorites, along with small amounts of household scraps like pastry and rice.

To keep squirrels away, sprinkle some chilli powder over the food. They dislike the spice, but birds won’t be bothered by it. The RSPB suggests using a good mix of bird food to attract different species.

So, grab some chilli powder and help our feathered friends thrive this winter!
