Byker: A Syrian man named Osama Kabas has opened a Lebanese restaurant called Beyruty. It’s a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather’s grill house back in Beirut.

Osama, who goes by Sam, is just 26 and hails from Damascus. He teamed up with his friend Ayoub Asafra, a chef from Daraa, to bring authentic Arabic flavors to Tyneside.

Sam shared, “My grandfather had a restaurant in Beirut ages ago. I always dreamed of opening one like it here.” He’s recreated the same gold decor to honor his grandfather’s memory.

The restaurant is in a spot that used to be another Lebanese place, which sadly closed after a break-in. Sam has put a lot of effort into fixing it up and making it feel welcoming.

He’s even created ten jobs for cooks and waitstaff, with hopes to hire more as business grows. “It took over a month just on the interior design. It looks completely different now,” he said.

The community has welcomed them warmly, not just locals from Syria and Lebanon, but everyone in Byker. Sam wants to make sure people feel comfortable trying something new.

Beyruty opened last Friday and can seat 80 diners. They don’t have an alcohol license yet, but you can bring your own drinks. Plus, they offer takeaway options.

Sam explained, “We serve Lebanese dishes like hummus and kebabs, but there’s so much more. It’s all about grilling, with seasoned meats and unique flavors.”

He promises great service and delicious food from the moment you walk in. “We might even surprise you with some fresh bread and hummus on the house. That’s what Lebanese hospitality is all about.”
