Jesmond: A former drug addict is in trouble again. Craig Atkin, who once helped others, has returned to stealing.

Atkin started a business called Clean Living. It helped people with drug issues. His company got funding from the NHS and charities. He stayed out of trouble from 2009 to 2021. But when Covid hit, his business collapsed, and he lost his way.

Recently, Atkin stole a £279 pair of sunglasses from John Lewis. He has a long history of theft, with 50 offenses on his record. This week, he faced court again. He pleaded guilty and received a 12-month conditional discharge. He also has to pay costs and a victim surcharge.

In court, the prosecutor shared details of the theft. Atkin was caught on CCTV taking the sunglasses. Security recognized him and detained him outside the store. He admitted to the police that he stole them.

Before 2009, Atkin struggled with drugs. But from 2009 to 2021, he stayed clean. His lawyer explained that Covid caused his business to fail. After that, he lost his purpose and started using drugs again.

Now, Atkin has found a place to live and is not using drugs. He hopes to turn his life around once more.
