Cork bus drivers may stop services on Route 203 due to rising violence and threats against them, raising safety concerns for both drivers and passengers.
Dermot O’Leary, from the National Bus and Rail Union, shared that incidents of antisocial behavior have increased. This route runs from Parkland Drive in Blackpool to Manor Farm off Pouladuff Road.
Reports of racial abuse and threats happen almost daily. A small group of youths seems to be behind this troubling behavior. Just last week, a stone smashed a bus window on this route.
O’Leary emphasized that this route serves great communities. However, the ongoing threats are alarming. Some drivers no longer report incidents, as they’ve become too common.
He warned that if things don’t change, services might need to be reduced. The situation is serious, and drivers must prioritize their safety and that of their passengers.
O’Leary also called for the promised transport police to be established quickly. He believes the community must also step up to address these issues.
Bus Éireann stated they do not tolerate antisocial behavior. They take safety seriously and investigate all reported incidents.
Concerns remain about the new transport policing program. O’Leary noted that creating a separate police force for buses and trains could complicate things for the already stretched Gardaí.
