Newcastle: Work is starting on a new government building in the city center. This office block will house hundreds of workers.

The new buildings, called Pilgrim Place 1 and 2, are being built near Bank House on Pilgrim Street. DWP has signed a deal to take over Pilgrim Place 1, which will become a Service and Support Centre by 2027.

Construction is moving fast, with two tower cranes already on site. The new building will have over 173,000 square feet of space for more than 1,700 workers. Pilgrim Place 2 will offer an additional 90,000 square feet of office space.

The project includes a plaza, public improvements, and parking. Bowmer and Kirkland are the main contractors. Avison Young is working with Reuben Brothers on this development.

This project is part of a larger £300 million regeneration plan for Pilgrim Street, which started in 2019. The first phase included the Bank House office building, which is now 75% leased.

In addition, HMRC will set up a Government Hub in the area, providing office space for about 9,000 staff. This hub is expected to be ready for fit-out this October.

Other developments include converting a former fire station and police station into a boutique hotel, set to open in April. The historic Worswick Chambers is also being refurbished for leisure use, with an opening planned for spring.
