Durham’s Lumiere festival will return from November 13-15, 2025, featuring new light installations and community involvement, promising a magical experience for all.
Durham: The Lumiere light festival is back! It will light up the city from November 13-15, 2025. Expect a stunning trail of artworks throughout the city.
This free festival, organized by Artichoke, promises to dazzle with new installations. It’s a shorter run this time, just three evenings instead of four.
Lumiere started in 2009 and has attracted many visitors each time. It’s known for its beautiful light displays and has expanded to include more areas in the county.
The last event in 2023 featured 40 artworks, including a stunning chandelier installation by Ai Weiwei. This year, more renowned artists will showcase their work.
Organizers aim to transform Durham into an illuminated art gallery. They emphasize the need for community support due to rising costs and funding challenges.
Helen Marriage, the artistic director, expressed excitement about returning to Durham. She highlighted the festival’s positive impact on the local economy and community.
The festival will also continue its Beyond the Lights program, offering volunteering opportunities and benefiting local schools. Over the years, Lumiere has drawn over 1.3 million visitors.
Point North helps boost sponsorships, supporting local communities. Council leader Amanda Hopgood praised Lumiere as a transformative cultural event.
