Durham: A caver lost his life after a fall in North Yorkshire. The incident happened at Diccan Pot in Selside, Horton in Ribblesdale.

Rescue teams were called on Sunday around 12:27 PM. A group of cavers heard a loud bang and noticed the rope was tight. They quickly raised the alarm for help.

Despite the swift response, the man was sadly pronounced dead by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service after being brought out of the cave.

The Cave Rescue Organisation shared what happened. They said the caver was on the first pitch, about 100 feet down, when the group heard the noise. When they tugged on the rope, it didn’t budge.

The conditions were tough. Diccan is part of a larger cave system, and those at the top couldn’t see what was happening below. Worried for their friend, they called for assistance.

When rescuers arrived, they found the man unresponsive at the bottom. The first responders couldn’t find any signs of life. They carefully lifted him onto a stretcher and brought him to the surface, where paramedics confirmed he had passed away.

The Cave Rescue Organisation expressed their condolences to the family and thanked the University of Leeds for their support.

North Yorkshire Police reported that emergency services were alerted at 12:18 PM. Sadly, the 64-year-old man from Durham died at the scene. There were no suspicious circumstances, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
