A disqualified driver was arrested in Ennis for using a fake license and failing roadside tests for alcohol and drugs. Serious penalties are expected.
Ennis: A driver was pulled over for not having insurance. But it turned out they were in much deeper trouble. Gardaí discovered a whole list of road traffic offences.
This incident happened on a Sunday night. The Road Policing Units flagged the vehicle as uninsured using their Automatic Number Plate Recognition system. They thought it would be a quick check, but it quickly escalated.
The driver was already disqualified and tried to hide it with a fake license and name. To make matters worse, they failed roadside tests for alcohol and cannabis. Gardaí arrested them on the spot.
They seized the car and the fake license. A blood sample was taken, and a court date is coming up. This driver is now facing hefty fines and penalties.
For driving uninsured, they could face up to €5,000 and six months in prison. Driving without a license could add another €2,000 fine, plus more for drink and drug driving.
On top of that, they’ll likely get another driving ban. Using a fake license is a serious fraud charge, too. This isn’t the first time Gardaí have found a fraudulent license recently.
Just days earlier, another driver in Cork was caught with a fake license while driving recklessly. Clare Gardaí shared news of this arrest on social media and are also looking for information about a crash that happened the same day.
The crash occurred at Knockadrohid, O’Briensbridge, just before 4 PM. Two vehicles were involved, and one black jeep fled the scene. The three people in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Gardaí want to speak to the driver of the jeep that left. If anyone saw the crash or has dash cam footage of the black jeep driving erratically on the Killaloe to O’Briensbridge road, they should contact Killaloe Garda Station.
