County Durham: Mya Malthouse, just 20, has made her dream come true. She’s now an on-call firefighter! After finishing her A-Levels, she joined the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

Mya has always wanted to be a firefighter. She kicked off her training in September 2024 at Durham Fire Station. It’s been a journey she’s really enjoying.

She shared, “I’ve always wanted to help people. After chatting with folks in the Service, they suggested starting as an on-call firefighter for experience.”

So, she applied, passed the online tests, and then went to Consett Fire Station for role-related tests. She nailed those too and started training during drill nights at Durham Fire Station.

Alongside her firefighting role, Mya works as a sales assistant at Next. But her eyes are set on becoming a full-time firefighter someday.

Her family is super proud. Mya said, “My mam always wanted to be a firefighter too. I’m the first in my family to do this, and they’re really supportive.”

Mya encourages others to consider this path. “If you’re thinking about applying, go for it! Everyone has been so supportive since I joined.”
