Cork: There are around 17,000 derelict homes in Cork City and County. That’s a huge problem for communities. It’s a waste of housing when so many need a place to live.

Some say there could be up to 120,000 empty homes across Ireland. Many of these are in towns and rural areas. Both Cork City and County Councils are working to get the facts straight. They want to expand their lists of derelict sites.

In 2024, the number of derelict sites in Cork City tripled. The council is now applying a Derelict Site Levy to 174 properties. They’re also looking into hundreds more. Owners of these empty homes will soon get letters or notices on their doors.

The levy is a fine of 7% of the property’s value each year. This continues until the property is sold or developed. In many cases, owners are pushed to sell their properties. This helps bring them back to life.

The public can help too. If you see a property that looks derelict, report it. Both councils have online forms for this. If you care about your community and want to see homes for people, you can make a difference today.

Cork County Council has a simple online form on their Dangerous & Derelict Sites portal. Cork City Council also has a detailed reporting portal. Both councils will follow up on reports and work with property owners to find solutions. There are generous grants available for fixing up homes in both the city and county.
