Cork: A young girl named Amy O’Brien just made headlines. She caught a whopping 9.07kg carp at The Lough last July. This catch won her the Young Specimen Angler of the Year award from Inland Fisheries Ireland.

At just 13 years old, Amy used Boilie bait to reel in this giant. Now 14, she’s thrilled to be featured in the IFI report. Fishing runs in the family, as she often goes out with her dad, Sidney.

Amy’s not just about carp; she also caught sting rays and sharks last year. This is her third time winning the Young Angler award, which is pretty impressive!

Her carp is the fourth largest caught in Ireland last year. Interestingly, her dad holds the top three spots for carp caught at The Lough and Inniscarra Dam. His biggest catch was a 10.9kg fish in June.

The report also highlights other big catches, like a new record Gilthead Bream caught by Patrick Lombard. He snagged a 4.37kg fish in Clonakilty Bay.

There’s even more! Clinton Rachman won an award for a 38 cm Shore Rockling, and Alan George Willavise from Wales caught a massive 217 cm Flapper Skate.

In total, nearly 500 large fish were caught across Ireland in 2024, with most being released after weighing and measuring. Check out the full report for some amazing fish photos!
