Cork: Residents in Cork city centre were jolted awake by a loud siren alarm. It went off late Wednesday night, around 2 am.

Emergency services, including Gardaí and the Cork City Fire Brigade, rushed to the scene. They managed to silence the alarm just before 3 am.

A spokesperson from Cork City Council said the alarm is in a disused retail space on North Main Street. On quiet nights, the sound travels far, reaching areas like Fairhill and Ballyphehane.

Residents reported their pets barking and car alarms going off due to the noise. This isn’t the first time the alarm has disturbed the peace. It also went off in October after the Jazz weekend.

Many residents described the situation as a nightmare. Complaints about the alarm have been made since it started going off sporadically in March 2022.

We’ve reached out to Cork City Council to see if any action has been taken. Under European rules, external alarms should only last 15 minutes. For those affected, more information on noise pollution and complaints is available online.
