Cian Ducrot reflects on his Grammy win for “Saturn” with SZA, the afterparty hosted by Bruno Mars, and sharing the joy with his family.
Cian is from Passage West, and he feels amazed after the Los Angeles ceremony. He won a Grammy for “Saturn,” the Best R&B song, which he co-wrote with the artist SZA. He is the first Irish musician to win in that category, calling it a “full circle” moment for him.
“Saturn” was in a Mastercard ad last year. He praised SZA and the other writers, saying SZA is one of the most amazing artists. They celebrated the big win at a party, hosted by Bruno Mars, and Cian’s friends came, along with his girlfriend, Sofia Jane.
The experience felt really “surreal” for Cian. He got invited to Bruno Mars’ afterparty, where Bruno and his band performed all night long. It was an unbelievable experience.
They played fun songs and classic covers all night, and everyone danced and had a great time at the party. There were only about one hundred people celebrating, and it was crazy to be included with his girlfriend and friends.
He said it’s not every day you win a Grammy award. He celebrated well while singing along to Bruno Mars, telling Paul Byrne on Corks 96FM about it. It was an incredible day and evening. Of course, he made sure to call his family; it was tough to get through all the media attention, but he wanted to share his great news.
He texted his mom after winning, as he had press, photos, and many messages, making it impossible to even look at his phone all day. He finally spoke with her the next morning. It was amazing to chat with his brother, who joked about Cian having an R&B Grammy, thinking it felt pretty “gangster” somehow.
Cian joked he would wear his Grammy everywhere, imagining it as bling around his neck. He might make gold jewelry like grills. SZA chose him for the song on Instagram, messaging him out of the blue, which amazed him, given her many followers online and billions of Spotify streams.
She asked him to write with her in LA; it felt surreal. He did not know why she chose him. He said yes and went to LA quickly. The song sort of fell out in the room. SZA improvised on the microphone, and it worked.
He helped write melodies and lyrics and provided more ideas, supporting what she wanted to do. The instrumental music was magical, allowing Carter, Scott, Jarrett, and Rob to win a Grammy, too, as the instrumental set the song’s tone.
His R&B Grammy Award was great for the Cork man. He moved to LA at 22, chasing his pop career, which worked. His first album hit #1 in the UK and Ireland.
