Fletcher truly shines in this leading role and fills Doris Day’s shoes well. However, that is not the only thing good about it.
Vinny Coyle plays Wild Bill Hickok confidently. He and Fletcher work well together, with their chemistry clear from the start.
Samuel Holmes plays Francis Fryer, often making the audience laugh. His comic timing is excellent.
Many catchy songs are in the musical. The Black Hills of Dakota is a classic, and, at times, the audience can even sing along. Some older lyrics changed, though.
Whip-Crack-Away and Just Blew in from the Windy City are songs that stand out. People tap their feet, imagining a saloon. Wild Bill sings Higher than a Hawk in act two, while Fletcher sings Secret Love powerfully.
Her voice captivates everyone, proving why she is the star.
The cast also plays their instruments as there is no orchestra in the pit, an impressive part of the show.
Calamity Jane embraces its old-fashioned feel. The set isn’t fancy: coconuts sound like horses, and chairs become a train through simple turns. The effects communicate perfectly.
