A driver in West Cork was stopped after Gardaí found his vehicle had three dangerously worn tyres resembling Formula 1 racing slicks and car seized.
Three tires were almost totally smooth, with tire threads showing through the rubber. The tires were so shiny you saw reflections. The Gardaí shared the incident online.
They joked the tires looked like Formula 1 tires, which race cars use cars for better grip. However, these tires are unsafe on normal roads; turning becomes difficult and skids are more likely. Punctures and aquaplaning also become major risks.
The car’s NCT and tax were also expired. Therefore, police towed the car to the impound. West Cork sees many dangerous vehicle issues.
For example, a drug driver once used actual slick tires. Another car had a damaged spare tire, one that had multiple bad repairs. This type of tire isn’t safe over 50 km/h.
The worst case involved a car stopping suddenly, when a large spanner pierced a rear tire. This happened outside Bandon in 2020. A tire expert called it a very rare event.
