North Lanarkshire considers up to 11% council tax rise. Faces budget issues. Swinney advises against large increases.
North Lanarkshire’s budget meeting happens on February 20. Local government leaders think funding is better this year. However, they still feel effects from past underfunding.
North Lanarkshire has very low council tax. They are considering several options to change this. One council report details four possible rises: 12.49%, 7.44%, 10%, and 13.76%.
The town hall considers a 9%-11% rise. This should address a £14 million shortfall. An 11% increase adds £145 to a Band D bill. The current Band D bill costs £1320.78.
The government gave councils £144 million. This helps with employer insurance rises. North Lanarkshire says this cash does not help much. East Lothian considers a 10.6% rise. Edinburgh officials discuss an 8% increase.
Swinney said his budget stops big rises. He thinks 10% is too high. He said large increases are not needed.
North Lanarkshire Council said no decision is final. A council meeting on February 20 will set the budget. This includes the council tax amount.
